U-2601 was intended to be the first of a new mark of ocean-going U-boats. Originally proposed in 1943, disagreements over the design and role of this type of submarine in a war which was changing course rapidly delayed its launch until February, 1945.
   After brief sea trials in the North Sea, U-2601 was loaded with a secret cargo and despatched to Argentina in mid-April, 1945. The vessel was decommissioned in June, 1945 and formed an unofficial part of the Argentine navy until mid-1952. It was then sold to the first of its private owners.
   The boat has been extensively re-fitted and the accommodation for both the crew and the passengers is now close to luxurious.
   Currently berthed in a private boatyard on Grand Bahama, U-2601 may be viewed by appointment.
