SIGHISOARA
THE ARCHITECTURE OF DOWN TOWN

In the centre of the town, in the H.Oberth Square, one can admire some monument houses: THE ZILINSKI HOUSE - a baker's house; THE ROSENTHAL HOUSE, with a beautiful blazon carrying the motto: "Per spinas ad rosas" that belonged to the Mayor Schuller von Rosenthal, an adventurer decapited in 1703, in the yard of the Dominican Church; THE HANDICRAFTSMEN'S HOUSE (the actual "Perla Cetatii" restaurant), from the 19th century, an eclectical architecture with strong influences of the German Renaissance; THE RESTAURANT HOTEL BUILDING "STEAUA", dating from the 19th century, restored in 1912 by the architect Baltes in Art-Nouveau style; THE BUILDING OF THE "MIRCEA ELIADE" HIGH SCHOLL, where in the inter-war period Horea Teculescu activated as the headmaster of the high school and of the ASTRA DEPARTMENT, remaining an outstanding personality in the cultural life of Sighisoara, owing to his activity. On the Zaharia Boiu street close to the Minicipal Hospital, founded in 1897, there in HERMAN OBERTH HOUSE (1894-1989), where the future scholar and father of cosmonautics lived his childhood and had been learning for 8 years. On this street too, at number 33, we find ZAHARIA BOIU HOUSE (presently THE ORTHODOX PARISH HOUSE). An important representative of the Romanian school in Transylvania, author of textbooks, Zaharia Boiu (1834-1903) was the first Romanian graduate from the German High school on the Hill. His father is the one who founded in 1861 the first Romanian School in the city, on 5, inkers' street.

The traveller, who is leaving the town of Sighisoara, making for Targu-Mures or for Medias, meets on the left side, a little hill on which there is a turret, known as "AT FACE" monument. The legends tells that during a siege of the city, a good marksman would have hit with a gun shot, from the Bastion placed in front of the Goldsmiths'Tower, a Turkish pasha mounted on a white elephant. It is said that the pasha was burried together with his arms and elephant.

On the place where he fell down, this turret was erected, which, owing to his 7 sides, could also be related to the year 1469, when the king Matei Corvin confirmed the rights of the seven Saxon seats, including the city of Sighisoara.

In the City of Sighisoara, there is an intense cultural life, manifest through the great number of yearly International Festivals, already famous: The Festival of Medieval Art, which takes place every year at the last end of week of July; the Festival of Academic Music, which promotes well known artists as well as young talents, every year on 1-10 August; the Interethnic Festival "Proetnica".

The medieval atmosphere of the old burgh is also maintained owing to the organon concerts in the Monastery Church, which take place every week, on Friday.

If we consider the great number of tourists from everywhere, who are delighted to come back, the great number of artists who immortalised it in their works, either on canvas, or in poetry, or in music, Sighisoara is for certain "a dream city".
